Microsoft Building 5, Reading

Having already supplied fan coils on Building 4, we were asked to assist with the fan coil design for Building 5.

We were invited to a site meeting with the Main Contractor Bovis, a representative from Microsoft, the Consultant and the Commissioning Manager, to demonstrate the Matrix unit. Having witnessed the energy savings, control options, reduced commissioning times and costs, it was decided that the Matrix unit would be used on this project. Ability Projects prides itself in applying the correct solution and selection for the client and we were able to work alongside Hoare Lea and FCS to ensure correct ductwork selection and velocities to ensure the design noise levels would be met.

Microsoft 5 consists of a new build 3 storey office with open plan and individual offices. A full BMS system controlled the environment and duties ranged from 1 to 5kw cooling and heating.

A project of this size normally has commissioning snags to overcome. However, as the Matrix units has infinite speed control per spigot , there were no airflow or noise issues and commissioning of 287 units was completed in 3-4 days (normally this would have taken 2-3 weeks).

Ability have continued to supply Matrix units on other prestigious projects including Rio Tinto, Severn Trent Water and Raynton Bridge.
